Not many of you may know about her, but if you did then you would certainly know how influential Wangari Maathai was. To me she was my hero, so much so that when I wrote my application essay for grad school, she was one of the persons I talked about. She fought against corruption, greed and supported the environment. Her actions were so powerful that for a woman of her status in the African contest she went beyond what the African culture had set as the bar for women. She was a 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Winner, (First for Africa) and a founder of the Green Belt Movement.
She had plans to turn Kenya into a green country, what it once was before deforestation took place. She was an exceptional woman, whose influence will continue to be felt throughout the country for many years to come. As I continue to pursue ethics and public policy, I will continue to be remained of her actions and what I can do to continue the fight against injustice in the society. At times we do not need any accolades or prizes, but what we do will surly impact at least one person in life and this, in itself is just.
