Christmas this year may never be the same again for some families, especially for the soldiers who will be coming home from the Iraq war. While there are various schools of thought, on what the causes of the war were, whether it was justified or, whether there was enough intelligence gathered to provide evidence of weapons of mass destruction or not, the war will finally end.
This will also be the beginning of new history books, and extra credits for electives that will be created by colleges. Scholars and analysts will have other topics to add to their discussions, and new strategic decisions will be made by various governments. Lessons learned will shape future wars for any nation that decides to do be engaged in any war. However, one thing is for sure, the facts will continue, it was an expensive and an unjust war.
Consider the following:
* 4,499 U.S. military killed
* 32,200 wounded
* 110,000 estimated Iraqi civilian deaths
* 2.5 million internally displaced Iraqis
* $800 billion in federal funding for the Iraq War through FY2011
* An estimated $3-5 trillion total economic cost to the United States of the war in Iraq.
* As many as 300,000 U.S. troops returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan with post-traumatic stress disorder.
* 320,000 troops returning from Afghanistan and Iraq with traumatic brain injuries
* The number of suicide attempts by veterans could exceed an earlier official estimate of 1,000 a month.
